Diamond Turns to Gold!

Ireland wins first gold medal at 2007 Special Olympics World Games

Gary Diamond from Cordarragh, Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo has become Ireland’s first gold medal winner at the Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai when he won his singles event in Bocce at the Jiading Stadium.

On his way to the final he beat fellow Irish player Ruth Gribbon from Dundalk 12 – 3. In the final Gary Diamond beat Amer M. El Makdah from Lebanon by an impressive 12 – 1 points.

Ruth Gribbon put her defeat to Gary quickly behind her as she went on to take the bronze medal in the same event. Ruth was cheered on by all 19 family members who are here in Shanghai to support her!
