Charlie O’Reilly

Charlie joined the Kilternan Karvers Special Olympics Club when a family friend whose daughter attended the club told Charlie’s parents about it. Having just returned from a family skiing holiday in Bulgaria his family were delighted to hear about a Special Olympics Ski Club where Charlie would get the opportunity to be coached by great instructors who had the skills and patience to teach people with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics is a huge part of Charlie's life. He is a member of four different clubs – Kilternan Karvers, Tivoli Tigers, Blackrock Flyers and Cabinteely Special Olympics club. He looks forward to each club’s training sessions every week and plans his week around his sports. Apart from a love of sport he also loves the social aspect and has made lots of new friends. Although he is in a mainstream school and joins the other students in soccer and basketball it is at Special Olympics that he really gets to shine!

During that family holiday in Bulgaria he joined a class with his brothers but after a while decided he knew how to ski and left the class (unknown to his hapless teacher!!) to ski back to the village, which was an 8 km run on a forest track! Fortunately he was spotted by a snowboarder who got him back to safety. Now two years later Charlie would have no problem skiing that run!
