Athlete's Diaries

Athlete: David Corroon, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.

David has travelled to Shanghai with his parents, Peter and Bernie, sisters, Avril and Shauna to fulfill a lifelong dream of a double Gold. Athlete, David, the youngest member of the Special Olympics Irish Basketball Team will be striving for gold on the double in Shanghai. A talented athlete not only does he play for his country he also will achieve a Bord Gaisce Presidents Award of a gold medal on completion of his Special Olympics venture. Having already attained silver and bronze Gaisce awards, David will more than likely achieve Gold level status on completion of his adventure task which is to remain apart from his family for more than 4 days. Shanghai has granted this and now David has Gaisce Gold.

On the playing court today David represented his country with pride, contributing in a valuable way to their fantastic 11 – 0 victory over a valiant Austrian team. This amazing athlete has also played a key role in helping other charities raise valuable funds. David has cycled on 3 occasions from Mullingar to Galway on a tandem bike with his dad Peter to raise money for the Irish Breast Cancer Society. A member of the Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar cycle club, David sings their praises for their support in his venture to Shanghai. Having only recently finished school David has now taken up employment in McDonalds in Mullingar and is already a popular character with all the staff.

Coming to Shanghai David has completed his adventure, his community task is ongoing visiting the elderly in his home town of Mullingar, playing cards, telling stories and watching the horses on the T.V. In sport he has completed 60 hours of swimming and his own personal task of improving his speech has been fully accomplished. He now concentrates on going for gold in the Special Olympics playing his part with the Irish Basketball Team.

An all-rounder whose hobbies include music, swimming and play-station, David now tells us his biggest claim to fame is appearing on the Eircom 04 telephone directory.

The double gold is definitely achievable and with his talent, personality and will to win no stones will be left unturned in an effort to fulfill his dream of “An Olympic Gold Medal”.
