World Games 2009
After months of hard work and training TEAM Ireland comprising of 8 athletes and 6 coaches are ready and eager to take on the world!
The 8 athletes on TEAM Ireland will represent Special Olympics Ireland in Alpine Skiing:
Matt English, Chief Executive Special Olympics Ireland said: "The team has been working incredibly hard since they were selected a year ago. I know that they will do us all proud as they participate in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho".
Approximately 40 Irish family members are travelling to the Games to support TEAM Ireland, accompanied by a group of 40 Special Olympics Ireland volunteers who travel and work at the Games and support TEAM Ireland. President Mary McAleece sent a message of good luck to TEAM Ireland and said, "You are an inspiration to us all and we have no doubt you will do us all proud as you represent Ireland north and south on a world stage".
Nearly 2,500 athletes from more than 100 countries are expected to compete in this year’s Special Olympics World Winter Games making it the largest multi-day winter sporting event ever held in Idaho. Competition will take place in several sports- Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Floor Hockey, Snowboarding and Speed Skating.
